Fairport native Ben Wood doesn't let 'Shark Tank' sink his spirits

Fairport native Ben Wood doesn't let 'Shark Tank' sink his spirits

Last Friday, local entrepreneur Ben Wood, was featured on the hit TV show, “Shark Tank,” which throws hopeful business owners into the “shark tank,” a panel of self-made millionaires who decide whether to invest in the contestant’s product.

In the episode, Wood, 29, pitched his product, Viewsport, athletic shirts that reveal words and patterns that are activated by sweat.

He began by soaking a shirt to display the hidden message. He said they were fully customizable and that he was interested in spreading the technology into other kinds of clothing. Although his initial presentation was strong, he failed to garner any support from the five potential investors.

The sharks began to question his product’s potential. As he accidentally soaked the wrong side, the message failed to appear on the shirt that was custom made for the show.

Local entrepreneur Ben Wood will be featured on the hit TV show, “Shark Tank” this Friday at 8 p.m.

He will be pitching his unique product, Viewsport, athletic shirts that reveal words and patterns that are activated by sweat.

“It’s motivation through perspiration,” said Wood, who dropped out of medical school in 2009 and later started his own business selling the shirts.

Last summer, the 29-year-old Fairport native and Rochester resident applied to be on the show, which gives entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their business ideas to five judges, or “sharks” in hopes of winning funding to help jumpstart their businesses.

He was then selected to audition and flew to Culver City, California, where the episode was taped in the fall.

While filming, he stood stood before the sharks for more than an hour as they critiqued Viewsport and asked sharp, rapid-fire questions about his product and business plan.
