Earthquake hits Braeside, Canada

Earthquakes Canada is reporting a 5.1-magnitude earthquake just west of Ottawa that was felt as far away as Toronto.

The federal agency that monitors earthquakes revised its original report, saying it registered a 5.1-magnitude temblor with an epicenter located about 13 miles northeast of Shawville, Quebec, about an hour's drive outside Ottawa.

It was felt as far west as Toronto, Canada's largest city, but no damage was immediately reported.

Twitter erupted with reports of buildings shaking in Ottawa for several seconds. Ontario's premier, who lives in Toronto, tweeted that her house was shaking.

Testimony begins in trial for two people accused in death of Fairport teacher

She was a mother of two and a popular teacher in the Fairport Central School District. The trial for the two people charged in her death got underway Thursday.

Investigators call it a deadly game of cat and mouse. They say Mark Scerbo and Meagan Merkel were chasing each other down the road after a night of drinking last July. That's when officials say both their vehicles hit and killed Heather Boyum, who was riding her bike.

This is an unusual trial because prosecutors are trying Merkel and Scerbo simultaneously in the same courtroom with one judge and two different juries. Officials say it's to save you, the taxpayer, some money.

Opening statements in the case against Mark Scerbo wrapped up Thursday afternoon. Opening statements for Meagan Merkel were held Thursday morning.

East Rochester eyes public park upgrades

East Rochester eyes public park upgrades

Its public parks are some of East Rochester’s greatest assets, and now the town/village is hoping to make them better as it seeks new state funding for park development.

Whether it’s a stroll through Edmund Lyon Park or the ping of a baseball at Eyer Park during a Little League game, these sights and sounds give life to the tight-knit community as families seek places of play outdoors.

For parents like Ashley Brandt, a trip to the playground or baseball diamond at Eyer Park, their “go-to spot,” is a sort of getaway for her two children, ages 7 and 3.

“If you go somewhere like Ellison Park (in Rochester) there are too many people,” said Brandt. “I like that with small-town parks, it’s more secluded. When you go you know there will be people from your town.”

This year, East Rochester will be submitting an application for a New York State Park Development grant.

Ride of Silence honors fallen Fairport teacher

On Wednesday night many people got on their bikes for a ride in silence to honor those injured or killed while riding their bicycles and to raise awareness.

Organizers of Wednesday night's ride hoped to bring more awareness to bicycle safety.

Members of the "Moms in Motion" also rode their bikes in honor of a teammate and friend.

Heather Boyum, a Fairport High School science teacher, was riding her bike last July on Route 250 in Penfield, when she was hit by a motorcycle and then a car.

Opening arguments begin Thursday in the trials of the two people charged in connection with her death. Police say Mark Scerbo was driving the motorcycle and Megan Merkel was driving the car that hit her.

More than 100 cyclists took off from the parking lot of the Penfield Highway Department. They rode off to the sounds of "Amazing Grace."
