Bridge replacement over I-490 at Route 96 delayed two weeks

Crews were supposed to start work Monday on a $4.4.-million project to replace the bridge that carries an exit and entrance ramp between Route 96 and I-490 in Perinton but the project start date has been postponed until Tuesday, May 28.

Drivers traveling on I-490 westbound will proceed to the next interchange at Route 31 in Pittsford (Exit 28). Motorists can exit and re-enter the expressway to return eastbound to exit at Route 96.  The detour will direct motorists on Route 96 to proceed south to the next interchange on Route 96 to enter I-490 westbound. A temporary left-turn lane and traffic signal will be installed on Route 96 to allow motorists access to I-490 westbound at Exit 28 (the interchange closest to Victor.)

There will be no impact to travel in the eastbound direction.

The new bridge is slated to reopen by mid-September.

Car wars: Fairport to continue Cruise Nights this summer

Car wars: Fairport to continue Cruise Nights this summer

Classic car enthusiasts will have their choice of “Cruise Night” events this season as the tradition continues at the Box Factory in the village of Fairport.

While Larry DiLullo, the original event organizer, has chosen to leave the location after 11 years, Chris Casa, landlord of the Box Factory, has decided to start his own event of the same kind on June 4.

Casa said he was surprised and sorry to learn DiLullo has chosen to move to the Burgundy Basin Inn outside the village. He added that the popular event was a big draw for local businesses.

“I’m hoping to get people out of their homes on one of the busiest nights in Fairport for some music and fun times,” said Casa.

Neil Clark is the owner of Towpath Cafe at the Box Factory, where the event has taken place. He has agreed to split the cost of renting the parking lot with The Ice Cream Factory (formerly Lickety Splits).

East Rochester votes yes on $7.6 million Eyer Building project

On Monday night, the East Rochester Village Board of Trustees voted to move forward with the $7.6 million Eyer Building renovation project in hopes of stimulating new economic revitalization in downtown.

Tensions were high as the board voted 3-2 to approve the project by awarding construction bids for the project, which includes demolition of the village's current offices on West Commercial Street to create new parking and move village operations, including the courts, police department, library into the now-vacant Eyer Building on the corner near Main Street.

Trial begins for woman charged in connection with Fairport teacher's death

A second jury selection begins Tuesday morning in the trial for a Fairport teacher's death. That jury will decide the verdict for Megan Merkel.

Merkel is charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI along with Mark Scerbo. They will be tried at the same time but with different juries. Scerbo's jury was seated last week.

Investigators say he was riding a motorcycle last July when he hit Heather Boyum. She was riding her bicycle on Route 250 in Penfield. After Boyum was hit by the motorcycle, police say she was hit again by a car driven by Merkel.

Another arrest made in connection with Perinton home invasion

Another arrest has been made in connection with a home invasion in Perinton last week.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says Lindsay Rambert is charged with fourth degree conspiracy. Sheriff's Deputies say the 24-year-old's arrest is related to the home invasion at an apartment on Alpine Knoll late Thursday.

Investigators say three men assaulted another man inside with a weapon and then ransacked the apartment. Deputies say the suspects took two rifles and other items before tying the victim up.

According to a sheriff's office spokesman, Rambert was in a car driven by Michael Corvelli. That car, with both of them inside, was stopped by police Friday morning. Corvelli was taken into custody. At that time, Rambert was questioned by police, but was released.
