Tara Lally is going from scary to sexy in her new role with the the Rochester City Ballet.

The Fairport dancer will play the leading lady in RCB’s production of “Carmen” as part of its choreographers showcase, “Dance Mix,” which opens this weekend at Nazareth College.

The sensual ballet is a rendition of the opera by the same name, set in Seville, Spain.

“The girls are sexy, and they aren’t afraid to show their sexuality,” said Lally.

The 27-year-old Fairport native has been dancing with the Draper Center for Dance Education for over 20 years.

Her role as Carmen requires her to seduce the unwilling Don Jose, who is soon driven mad with desire for her.

Lally says the personality of her character has some similarities to the role of the cruel, bloodthirsty Elizabeth Báthory in “The Blood Countess” that she played last year.

“They’re both confident and powerful women,” she said.

Unlike the countess, Carmen is more playful and provocative, which can sometimes be a challenge coming off a darker role.

“It’s fun to play (Carmen) — she’s very spicy,” said Lally. “It brings out a different side in me as a dancer, to let my guard down on stage.”
