Fairport gym works around the clock

Fairport gym works around the clock

It’s been one year since they opened PUSH Fitness Center, and owners PJ and Jen Pagano say it finally feels like home.

The Webster couple had their eye on the location on Fairport Road for seven years before getting approval to open the gym — a smaller alternative to larger fitness centers on the east side of Monroe County.

On any given day, the main floor is buzzing with members coming for their regular workout. Gym members can even swipe a card 24/7 to visit before or after work.

Jen Pagano, 35, says people were signing up for memberships before PUSH opened its doors in February 2012.

“They really believed in us, and it’s been like that ever since we opened,” she said.

This year, in an effort for the program to have a greater impact and help even more Rochester area children and families; Alyssa’s Angels reached out for partner organizations from the community to match its $500 donation. Through this effort, each of the five selected non-profit organizations received $1,000.

Shoppers out for Small Business Saturday

Across the country shoppers were encouraged to shop locally for Small Business Saturday. Areas like Park Avenue and the Village of Fairport did everything they could to attract holiday shoppers with hopes of keeping some of the cash right here in the Rochester area.

Black Friday may be over, but for some the shopping season began on Saturday.

Shopper Barb Grau said, "I would rather buy a gift here which often times isn't that much more expensive or anymore expensive than at the mall and have this atmosphere."

Grau and her daughter Katie avoided the long lines on Friday and saved their money for smaller, more intimate shopping.

"It's far more user friendly, more personable," says Grau. "You walk in, they recognize you, you recognize them. Often times we know each other by name in different stores."

The day wasn't just about getting the best deals, it was a perfect way to support small businesses nationwide.
