Like a good pair of shoes, Tony’s Shoe Repair has been handed down over the years.

The family business was first opened by Tony Pittinaro Sr. in 1937. He entrusted the business to his son, and it was later taken over by Tony Jr.’s brother-in-law Nick DiBello.

When DiBello retired, the business was again handed down to trusted repairman, Dave Kelly. Although he’s not a member of the family by blood, Kelly also comes from a family of shoe repairmen.

$11M Fairport senior apartment complex nears completion

$11M Fairport senior apartment complex nears completion

The renovation of Fairport Apartments on Whitney Road is 75 percent complete.

The 104-unit apartment campus, first built in 1972, is being redeveloped to create affordable housing for low to moderate-income seniors.

The complex was first built in 1972 and has been undergoing an approximately $11 million renovation since last year — a project undertaken by the Fairport Baptist Home, Rochester’s Cornerstone Group, and Perinton Churches Housing.

Funding has come from 10 different funding sources and includes state and federal aid. The new suites have their own kitchen, washer and drier, and have better handicap and wheelchair accessibility than the previous facilities.

Cheer Body Shop a place of solitude

Cheer Body Shop a place of solitude

It takes someone who’s familiar with stress to create a place to treat it, and Fairport woman Lorie Cheer has had her share.

Before pursuing massage therapy as a profession, she had a career in sales and supplies marketing at Xerox — a job that forced her into the habit of getting weekly massages almost every week to help cope with the stress.

Today, Cheer has her own massage and body shop in Packetts Landing in the village of Fairport. After working 18 years as a licensed massage therapist, the 46-year-old says she couldn’t be happier with her decision to explore a new career path.

“I enjoy seeing people smile as they leave,” she said. “They come in hurting and stressed and leave feeling better.”

Cheer opened at the location, which was formerly Jojo’s Flair accessory shop, last November.

The shop’s soft blue walls help create a bright, yet peaceful environment that resembles a calm seashore.

Painting With a Twist to open in Fairport

Painting With a Twist to open in Fairport

This is the first time Painting With a Twist has come to the state of New York, and Fairport residents Jon and Lydia Hahn have the challenging, yet exciting task of introducing it to the public

The husband and wife learned about the lively paint workshop franchise last year from a friend who lived near New Orleans. After researching it, they decided to visit one of the stores in Michigan. Before long, they got the OK to open a store in their hometown.

They signed the lease at the vacant site of the former Sleep Cheap store on Fairport Road and started renovating the space in November 2011.

Ironically enough, one of their first projects was covering blue walls with paint. Now, the walls are a bright yellow with red and black accents, although the owners sometimes see traces of the old color peeking through.

“The blue rears its ugly head every once in a while,” said Jon, with a chuckle. “We’re still finding it.”
