Community remembers Fairport teen Blake Cognata

Hundreds came together Saturday night to celebrate the life of a Fairport teen who lost his battle with cancer.

Blake Cognata battled a rare cancer called Ewing's sarcoma.

He passed away at Strong Hospital Saturday morning, just days before his 18th birthday.

The lacrosse and football player captured the heart of the community with his strength and courage throughout his battle, that strength helping his team reach an undefeated regular season.

Sea of yellow at Fairport high school to support Blake Cognata

Fairport (8-0) is the only undefeated team in Monroe County and the Red Raiders are ranked third in the state. What mattered in the team's home game against Rush-Henrietta rather than those numbers, was the color. A sea of yellow packed the Fairport gym to support Blake Cognata who is battling Ewing's sarcoma.

Fairport won the game 68-40 and are now 9-0.

Alyssa’s Angels, a Henrietta based charity, started a holiday gift project in 2011 to directly help local children and families in need during the holiday season. Five worthy non-profit organizations were selected and Alyssa’s Angels donated $500 to each.

This year, in an effort for the program to have a greater impact and help even more Rochester area children and families; Alyssa’s Angels reached out for partner organizations from the community to match its $500 donation. Through this effort, each of the five selected non-profit organizations received $1,000.
