Perinton man sentenced to weekends in jail for deadly DWI crash | Crime
A Perinton man will spend eight weekends in the Monroe County Jail for a DWI crash that killed an elderly Fairport woman. Shawn Ahern was sentenced Wednesday at the Hall of Justice.
Ahern hit and killed Gracie Allen last December while she was crossing High Street in Fairport to go to church.
Sentencing was delayed earlier this month because Ahern stopped his alcohol treatment required as part of the plea deal. He's now re-enrolled.
At his sentencing, Ahern told the court how sorry he is. Judge Geraci said to him, “It’s nice to say you’re sorry but it’s a little too late for that.”
Allen's daughter wrote a letter to be read at sentencing. She said nothing I can say or do will bring my mother back. A sober person would not have struck my mother. She went on to write about how awful it was to spend 15 days in the ICU trauma unit watching her mother die. She believes Ahern should have faced stiffer charges and is not happy with the sentence.
Ahern will also be on probation for five years. He will also have to have an interlock device installed on his vehicle. He had previously been convicted of DWI in 2004
