How does their garden grow?

How does their garden grow?

Any dedicated gardener will tell you the best garden is one that's a work in progress.

"It's an ongoing labor of love, and we truly love it," said Jan Coon. "It's like an addiction, but a good one."

She and husband David's garden on Watson Road in Fairport will be among six different stops on Saturday's garden tour hosted by the Women's Council, a volunteer service organization that supports the Rochester Museum and Science Center.

The fourth annual event plans to draw hundreds of guests to walk through, admire, and enjoy.

The Coons have a five-acre farm and have been gradually adding to their garden over the last decade. Their slice of flora has drawn some attention from the public, dubbing it the "traffic stopping garden," as Jan Coon explains.

"I had somebody run into my mailbox while someone was looking at my garden," she said with a chuckle.

Fairport Girl Scouts invited to White House Kitchen Garden Planting

There is a group of local girl scouts who are very excited today. Troop 60325 from Fairport will get to meet First Lady Michelle Obama this Monday in Washington.

The Fairport girls are one of just five groups chosen to take part in the fourth annual White House Kitchen Garden Planting and our Janet Lomax will make the trip to Washington to cover the visit.

The junior scouts are 10 and 11 years old and they're focusing on the healthy eating platform so they started growing 100 tomato plants recently.

They decided to write a letter to Mrs. Obama asking for her help and it turned into an invitation to visit the garden at the White House.

Mrs. Obama planted the kitchen garden as a way to start a conversation about the health of the nation's children.

Labor Day might be the unofficial end to summer, but if you’re like me, you’re not ready to let go just yet. One part of summer I always miss is fresh fruit and vegetables and all the summer time recipes that can come straight out of the garden.

John Freeze, the executive chef of The Erie Grill at the Renaissance Del Monte Lodge, was nice enough to share some of his favorite recipes right out of The Erie Grill cookbook:
