"Friday Night Lights" at Fairport High School | News
“Friday Night Lights” at one local high school will actually go on tonight. The Fairport School District has been working for the past year to get lights up at the high school field.
About half of the 23 schools in our area have lights on their high school fields. Now you can add Fairport to the list. Tonight, the lights at Fairport High School’s all-purpose turf field will go on for the girls’ varsity soccer game with Irondequoit.
There were concerns over increased traffic and inconvenience to neighbors with the lighting upgrades, but those concerns appear to have been resolved.
Fairport alum and owner of Mark’s Pizzeria, Mark Crane, donated the $200,000 for the lights. Ironically, Crane’s two daughters will play in the soccer game tonight.
The lights provide greater usage of the multi-purpose field from 3:30 to 9:00pm for games and practices. In a normal season about 20 games will played under the lights. This season will be cut short with only about five to eight games played under the lights, but the lights will go back on in the spring.
“I don’t think you can put in to words what it means--the excitement and enthusiasm that’s there. This million dollar multi-purpose turf facility, you aren’t getting full use of it if you don’t have lights. Now it’s going to make that more of an advantage for our kids,” said Jim Zumbo, Fairport Athletic Director.
As far as football goes, Fairport could host a sectional game under the lights. That’s to be determined. Zumbo says having the lights will bring more attention to other sports, not just football.
