Fairport native to be featured on 'Shark Tank' this Friday | News
Local entrepreneur Ben Wood will be featured on the hit TV show, “Shark Tank” this Friday at 8 p.m.
He will be pitching his unique product, Viewsport, athletic shirts that reveal words and patterns that are activated by sweat.
“It’s motivation through perspiration,” said Wood, who dropped out of medical school in 2009 and later started his own business selling the shirts.
Last summer, the 29-year-old Fairport native and Rochester resident applied to be on the show, which gives entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their business ideas to five judges, or “sharks” in hopes of winning funding to help jumpstart their businesses.
He was then selected to audition and flew to Culver City, California, where the episode was taped in the fall.
While filming, he stood stood before the sharks for more than an hour as they critiqued Viewsport and asked sharp, rapid-fire questions about his product and business plan.
“Nobody walks out of that room unscathed,” said Wood. “You go in there, and it’s ruthless. But that’s the function of the show — to entertain people.”
He is not allowed to reveal the outcome of the show before it airs, but said that although the overall experience was stressful, he would do it again.
Wood’s advice for hopeful contestants? “Just be ready to swim fast,” he said.
