Fairport family gives gift of life through organ donation | News
As the number of organ donors increases locally, more families are giving others the gift of life after tragedy strikes.
This has been the case for the Matrachisia family, of Fairport. They had to decide what to do when Jeff Matrachisia, 48, was killed suddenly in a car crash last November.
After he was rushed to the hospital, Matrachisia died within 10 minutes of having the ventilator turned off. Doctors told the family that they had just one hour of time in which his tissues could be preserved.
“The doctor told me he’d be a good candidate for kidney donation,” said his wife, Debbie Matrachisia.
Faced with the difficult decision, she thought back to the years when her husband worked at Kodak. At that time, his boss, Andy Vang, had to undergo dialysis treatments. Debbie said she remembers the way her husband appreciated the way his boss looked out for his job in the workplace, and was saddened when Vang passed away.
Although Jeff was not a registered organ donor, his wife felt that he would want to honor his old friend, and more importantly, give others a chance at having the life that was taken away from him.
