Walk in memory of Fairport 5 | News
A community that's been through so much recently will remember a tragedy that happened five years ago.
Today is the annual Fairport Angel Walk. It's in memory of Hannah Congdon, Bailey Goodman, Meredith McClure, Sara Monnat and Katie Shirley.
They were killed in June 2007 when their car crashed head on with a tractor trailer in East Bloomfield. It happened just days after their high school graduation.
The girl's parents raise money for a different charity each year and Friday it was for the Joey Fund which helps Fairport families who have recently gone through disaster, crisis, or long term illness. The parents say the walk is their way of thanking those who have supported them.
"I can't believe it's been five years," says Angela Monnat, mother of Sara Monnat. "Sometimes it seems like it was just yesterday, and then other days it seems like an eternity has passed since we last saw our five beautiful daughters."
"I think every year the walk just sheds light on their lives," says Meryl Scheibl, who started the Walk. "So I think about them everyday but a little bit more today as we gather as a community."
211 people attended Friday's walk which means about 21 hundred dollars was raised for the Joey Fund.
