Fairport High School football season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 1

School officials are taking advantage of start of this year's football season to remind district families of the importance of staying safe.

The first varsity football game will be held this Saturday, Sept. 1 at East High School.

School won't start until Sept. 5, but Fairport Superintendent Jon Hunter said the first game is the chance for students and community members to show their school spirit.

"It creates opportunities to come together at the end of summer and to show our pride and sportsmanship in another community," said Hunter.

The recent tragedy involving drunk driving that ended the life of FHS teacher Heather Boyum puts the context of the away game into perspective, he explained.

"We're very concerned about the decisions any kid will make before the start of school," he said. "This is a message that people are thinking about, and it's important for us to share it with our kids and parents."

The first home game versus Webster Schroeder will be held at FHS at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.
