A fresh start for East Rochester pizzeria

A fresh start for East Rochester pizzeria

Customers will recognize Crust Pizza Kitchen on West Commercial Street in East Rochester as the former Despatch Pizza, which ran a successful business in the village.

But while the name of the business and owner have changed, the family recipes that made it successful have not.

“We’re looking at this as an opportunity to put our best foot forward,” said owner Tim Dougherty, 34, of Brighton.

Dougherty, who works as a personal trainer and owns his own sports nutrition and supplement business, came across the pizzeria while came across the pizzeria while searching for a kitchen to rent where he could prepare healthy meals for clients.

The Brighton resident soon became the owner of the pizzeria on West Commercial Street.
“It seemed like fate,” he said. “I think East Rochester is like a well kept secret,” he said.

New frozen yogurt cafe to open in Fairport

Where can you grab a latte with a side of mango sorbet and a choice of 40 toppings?

Thanks to the hard work of brothers Ken and Larry Cohen, that place will be Yummies, a frozen yogurt and specialty coffee shop in the village of Fairport.

The energetic brothers are natives of Buffalo, and see the new cafe as the fulfillment of their long-time dream.

“My brother and I always wanted to open a business together,” said Ken, 39, who left a job managing an optical store. Larry, 42, was transferred to Rochester while working for Windstream Corp.

After visiting another self-serve frozen yogurt shop last summer, they decided to pattern their business after the same concept. The result was a menu with 18 different flavors of “fro-yo” and a selection of 40 different toppings.

Sometimes it takes a few tries to perfect a brand new concept, and that just happened to be the case at LINKS.

You might remember it as Golf Play Cafe, which opened at Perinton Square Mall in January this year. The restaurant included virtual golf stations that allowed customers to eat and play at the same time.

Business was great at first, but as soon as the snow melted, many golfers took their game outdoors and didn’t return.

While the owners haven’t ditched their business plan altogether, they admit it needed to be changed to make it more welcoming to those simply looking for a bite to eat.

“The name ‘Golf Play’ seemed almost like a firewall for the non-golfer,” said co-owner Marc Hobler, of Penfield. “In the beginning, we didn’t bring enough people through the door who were non-golfers.”

Fairport pub goes on stay-cation to promote U.S. breweries

It's summer time, and the staff at Donnelly's Public House decided to take a 16-day trip without leaving town.

Some customers got confused when they saw daily Facebook updates on the pub's page that showed daily updates with photos from breweries in other states.

But this was all part of an effort to educate people about beer, and the places where some of the best brew is made.

"We didn't really go on a trip, but it was completely conceivable that we did," said owner Scott Donnelly. "The goal of our marketing was to engage people, and have fun with it."

The "trip" lasted 16 days and included stops at nine different breweries across the U.S.

Burgundy Basin Inn undergoes renovations

Burgundy Basin Inn undergoes renovations

The Burgundy Basin Inn has been undergoing a series of renovations in recent months.

The building, now more than a century old, has remodeling repairs each year. This round of improvements was more extensive, as the foundation, wall and floor were replaced on the main level.

Co-owner Mike Clarq said the owners decided to knock down the dividing wall between two rooms, one with a bar and another that hosted small-scale events like bridal showers. The new area will now function as one large banquet room.

"The end product is going to be much better than what we initially had," said Clarq.

All construction is expected to wrap up within the next two weeks and be open before the end of June.
